Rainfall in Karnataka’s Malnad region fell well below normal, with only 959 mm recorded during the June‑September southwest monsoon versus the typical 1,550 mm, a 38 % shortfall, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre. The deficit has reduced soil moisture, endangering rain‑fed maize and ragi crops in Shivamogga and could lower yields and farmer incomes.
