Was Silent Reading Unusual During Augustine's Time?
Researchers examined whether reading silently was common in the era of Augustine of Hippo (4th–5th century). By analyzing contemporary writings, commentaries, and monastic rules, they found that most texts were intended for oral delivery, with silent reading appearing sporadically among educated elites. The study suggests that widespread silent reading emerged later, during the medieval period.
