40 high-hazard glacial lakes identified in Sikkim, 16 at highest risk of outburst
State authorities in Sikkim have catalogued 40 glacial lakes classified as high hazard, with 16 deemed most prone to sudden outburst floods. Among them, the lake known as Shako Chho is considered the most vulnerable to a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). The assessment aims to guide monitoring and mitigation measures across the mountainous region.
