Assam Cabinet approves Rules for compulsory Muslim marriage registration
Assam's state cabinet has endorsed regulations that make it mandatory to register Muslim marriages. The rules put into effect a framework introduced by a 2024 law that superseded older colonial statutes. They establish minimum age limits for marriage and shift the authority for recording marriages from licensed religious officials to government-appointed registrars instead of licensed qazis.
