FSSAI proposes draft amendment to ensure only milk-derived products are represented as ‘Paneer’
India’s food regulator, the FSSAI, has drafted an amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations 2026. The proposal adds a clause to Regulation 2.1.1 that would prohibit labeling products as ‘paneer’ unless they are made from milk-derived ingredients, thereby restricting non‑milk based alternatives from using the name in Indian markets.
