During Emergency, DMK members were detained on vague grounds ‘against the spirit’ of MISA provisions: Shah Commission
India’s Shah Commission reports that during the Emergency, Tamil Nadu authorities detained 1,027 individuals under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act. Among them were 570 members of opposition parties, including the DMK, 139 linked to banned groups, and 318 classified as anti‑social or criminal elements. The commission says the detentions were based on vague criteria contrary to the act’s spirit.
