The black robin, once reduced to a single breeding pair, has rebounded to about 350 adult birds thanks to an intensive conservation breeding program. The species was recently voted New Zealand’s Bird of the Year, highlighting the success of the recovery effort and raising public awareness of the island’s endangered avifauna. The bird, nicknamed the ‘goth’ of New Zealand, secured the award in a public vote.
