Keys Not Included: recovering the signing keys for US driver's license barcodes
Researchers have successfully extracted the cryptographic signing keys used in the PDF417 barcodes on United States driver’s licenses. By analyzing publicly available license samples, they reconstructed the key material that validates the encoded personal data. The findings demonstrate that counterfeit licenses could be generated, raising concerns for state agencies and prompting calls for stronger barcode security measures.
