New eel species described from Arabian Sea, named after CMFRI
Researchers have identified a new eel species in the Arabian Sea, naming it Ariosoma cmfriense in honor of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute. The specimen was retrieved near Kollam, Kerala, at roughly 300 meters depth during a January 2026 expedition. The discovery adds to regional marine biodiversity knowledge and highlights deep‑water fauna in Indian waters.
