Scientists from a U.S. research team chase tornadoes in specially equipped vehicles, gathering data to uncover why certain storms spawn violent twisters. By flying close to the vortexes, they record wind speeds, pressure changes and other atmospheric conditions. The goal is to improve forecasting models and warning systems, ultimately reducing the hundreds of deaths tornadoes cause each decade.
