
Locked up with seven inmates, M.K. Stalin was beaten, harassed, and fed kali during Emergency period
During India’s Emergency, 23‑year‑old M.K. Stalin was held for several months in Madras Central Prison. He later told the Justice M.M. Ismail Commission that jail staff repeatedly beat him, harassed him and forced him to drink kali, a bitter concoction. Stalin said the same abuse was inflicted on other inmates, highlighting harsh conditions in the facility.
