Tamil Nadu’s demand for a separate flag is over 50 years old
Tamil Nadu’s call for a distinct state flag dates back more than half a century. In 1970, former chief minister M. Karunanidhi formally petitioned the Union government for permission to adopt a separate emblem, but the centre declined, citing constitutional restrictions. Since then the issue has resurfaced periodically, though the state continues to use only the national flag for official ceremonies.
