SLAC researchers find proof of altermagnetism, a new magnetic phase
Scientists at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have experimentally confirmed the existence of altermagnetism, a previously theoretical magnetic state that differs from conventional ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders. The team observed alternating spin polarization in a crystal lattice, demonstrating the material’s unique symmetry properties. This discovery could open new avenues for spin‑based electronics and quantum information technologies.
