How ‘Murasu’ became the first Tamil name for a tropical cyclone
The Indian Meteorological Department has assigned the name “Murasu” to a tropical cyclone, marking the first time a Tamil word has been used since the North Indian Ocean naming system began in September 2004. “Murasu” denotes a traditional Tamil drum, reflecting regional cultural representation in cyclone nomenclature. The name was selected from India’s list of contributions, aligning with efforts to incorporate languages into the naming roster.
