How were the States formed and how has the Indian map changed since 1947?
Since independence in 1947, India’s internal map has been repeatedly redrawn, creating new states mainly on linguistic and administrative grounds and merging or bifurcating existing ones. Major reorganisations occurred in 1956, 1960, 1972, 2000 and 2014. The latest alteration came in August 2019, when the former state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into the union territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
