The great escape from Theni jail
On October 26, seventeen detainees awaiting trial tried to flee Theni district jail in Tamil Nadu. Within 42 hours, coordinated police teams and drone surveillance recaptured all escapees. The episode has prompted officials to examine chronic prison overcrowding, inadequate staffing, security lapses and broader calls for correctional reform. Authorities said the operation highlighted gaps in jail management and underscored the urgency of review.
