High Court orders Maharashtra government to pay ₹2 lakh compensation to activist for illegal arrest
India’s Bombay High Court ordered the Maharashtra government to compensate activist Arun Ferreira with ₹2 lakh for his illegal arrest. Ferreira was detained in 2007 on multiple charges, but was later acquitted of all. Following his acquittal, he was scheduled to be released from Nagpur prison in September 2011. The court said the detention lacked legal basis and the payment aims to redress the hardship caused.
