SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef
Historic passenger liner SS United States will be deliberately sunk to form the world’s largest artificial reef, aiming to enhance marine habitats and attract divers. Before scuttling, the ship will undergo environmental cleanup, removal of hazardous materials, and inspections. The project, slated for 2025, involves marine scientists and local authorities, and will include a ceremony marking the vessel’s new ecological role. It will also serve as a habitat for fish and coral, providing a new dive site.
