What was a Token Ring network?

Token Ring was a local area network technology created by IBM in the 1970s. It used a ring topology where a token passed around, giving a node permission to transmit. This deterministic access reduced collisions but made it slower than Ethernet. The standard, IEEE 802.5, allowed up to 255 stations and was common in corporate networks before Ethernet dominated.
