High-cost power to be purchased for 16 days to avoid unscheduled cuts, says Minister

India’s power ministry said it will buy expensive electricity for 16 days to prevent unexpected outages. The peak demand has risen to 21,000 MW from 16,000 MW last year, a 30 % jump attributed to the El Niño climate pattern. The move aims to keep the grid stable amid the higher consumption forecast. This procurement will cover peak load periods and reduce reliance on local generators.
