Buses carry most overnight travellers, two-wheelers dominate the daily work commute
India’s inaugural national travel survey shows that 55.8% of overnight household trips are made by bus, while rail accounts for 17.7%. For daily work commutes, only 5% rely on urban mass transit like metro or suburban rail, indicating a preference for private two‑wheelers. The data also highlights that private vehicles, especially two‑wheelers, dominate daily commuting, with buses still leading for overnight travel.
