Supreme Court refuses to stay Calcutta HC order in Great Nicobar Island Project; terms ‘preservation of culture’ a fundamental right

India's Supreme Court declined to suspend a Calcutta High Court ruling concerning the Great Nicobar Island development. The lower court had been approached by groups alleging that clearing more than 130 square kilometres of untouched tropical forest breaches the 2006 Forest Conservation Act and endangers the cultural heritage of the Shompen and Nicobarese peoples. The apex court let the order remain in effect.
