A new study in Icarus estimates that a flood from Valles Marineris, the Solar System’s largest canyon, released roughly 1,245 trillion cubic metres of water. The researchers suggest this event could have lifted the level of a hypothesized ancient Martian ocean by about 34 metres, indicating a significant but brief rise in the planet’s early sea level.
