India’s river interlinks may carry invasive species to more areas
A study warns that India's river interlink scheme could facilitate the spread of invasive alien species and aquatic diseases between basins. The Lower Ganga basin already hosts around a dozen invasive species and may become a source for the Mahanadi River, which supports dozens of threatened species. Linking waterways could erode the distinct ecological character of each river system.
